I swallowed up this 600 page monster of a book faster than my last handful of vicodin. THE OTHER HOLLYWOOD is the definitive oral telling of worlds most recession proof, dirty little (not-so) secret industry. Written by the author of PLEASE KILL ME: THE UNCENSORED ORAL HISTORY OF PUNK, and co-authored by acclaimed journalists Jennifer Osborne and Peter Pavia, THE OTHER HOLLYWOOD is compiled from hundreds of interviews from adult film actors, adult film directors, law enforcement officials, and dozens of other industry insiders.The book is put together in an interview format, broken down into specific chapters, and edited together in a time-lined fashion taking the reader on a historical journey from the innocent enough nudie cuties of the 50's, through the grainy 88mm aesthetic of the 70's, and finally to the mainstream phenomena of celebrity porn in the late 90's. You don't have to be familiar with the industry or even be a fan of it to enjoy this read. It contains all the elements of a Hollywood drama that Hollywood only wishes it could take credit for writing. And I suppose that in a sense, it can. Truth is always stranger than fiction and in the case of THE OTHER HOLLYWOOD, it doesn't get any more real than this.Packed with stories of FBI stings, Mafia connections, industry legalities, drug abuse, sex abuse, physical abuse, suicides, murder, and prison, THE OTHER HOLLWOOD is filled with enough tragedy to tug at the heart of even the most seasoned porn efficienoto. The book dedicates a large chunk of its time focusing on the three major events that rocked the industry. The first being Deep Throat and the phenomenon behind the film that launched porn into the mainstream spotlight. The second being the Traci Lords child porn scandal. And the third goes into graphic detail about the John Holmes Wonderland Murder case. Intertwined with these main events are numerous stories of the sexual exploits of rock stars and celebrities, who would probably prefer to have their names taken out of the book, re-tellings of the battles the industry faced by religious and political groups, the assault of AIDS on the industry, and the explosion of the saturated 80's video market and the many degenerates it turned into multi-millionaires seemingly overnight.This book has it all folks. I couldn't put it down.
